We first laid our eyes on this stunning ’90 VW GTI back in December of last year at the AutoCon event held in Southern California. We exchanged a couple of emails over the last few weeks and with the help of our friend Jon Tran and the owner Webb Star we’re finally able to take a closer look at this simple yet jaw dropping Mk2. It all started back in 2004 for Webb. He wanted a simple & straight forward euro car that he could track and have fun in. After picking up this ’90 GTi one of the first things he did was the engine swap. We’ll get into the details later but it’s definitely one of the things we love the most about it. This isn’t what you would call “typical” MK2 in this scene, and that says a lot. Let’s check out a few photos…

After the swap, next major change was paint. It’s as rare and unique as they get on Mk2’s. Webb wanted something different and simple so he went with Sport Classic Grey from a 2011 Porsche 997. Certainly not the color many would have gone after but we definitely think it works well and looks absolutely stunning. Webb says that he shaved and/or deleted almost every little thing from the exterior. We’re talking things like front bumper turn signals, hood vents, roof antenna and rear hatch wiper. Everything has been completely cleaned up. Under the hood sits a ’95 VR6 motor with things like Magnaflow exhaust, Unorthodox pulleys and Techtonics chip.
Car sits low on FK Silverline coilovers and is equipped with a beautiful set of BBS E50 wheels. They are 16×9 up front and 16×10 in the rear and are wrapped in 205/40/16 & 215/40/16 Falken tires. Webb is also rocking a Neuspeed rear sway bar along with a custom rear tie bar.as a matter of fact when he first started building the car he built it with “time attack” in mind (hence the cage) but as the time passed he moved on and wanted something streetable and good looking as well. Behind those beautiful BBS wheels Are G60 calipers which were painted BBS gold. Make sure you check out the entire spec list on the very bottom of this feature.
As mentioned earlier, the car was built with “function” in mind so it’s only normal to see that custom 6pt cage and all the Auto Meter gauges. Webb is also rocking a pair of Corba Monaco racing seats accompanied with 5pt crow racing harness. Check out these awesome photos that Jon Tran shot for us which also show the Momo steering wheel.
We’ll end it on that note. But before anything we would like to thank Webb Star so much for agreeing to make this feature happen. To be honest with you we’re a little bit surprised that this bad Bo isn’t sitting on the front page of automotive magazine. It certainly deserves it don’t you think? “Build your car to satisfy YOU!”. Thats the message Webb has for everyone he also wanted to thank GermanExklusiv, Dave’s speed & Marine, Meister Werks, 1552, Botelho Customs & of course his family. Be on the lookout for a new project in the near future but not until Webb is completely satisfied with his beautiful MK2.
